4 Ways to Make Your Home More Eco-Friendly
August 24, 2023
The modern developed world has embraced many changes in pursuit of environmentally-friendly living. As consumers, we are serious about recycling, avoid using plastic bags, avoid disposable products like utensils, drink water from reusable water bottles and drive cars powered by clean energy. Homeowners can take additional steps to reduce energy consumption and make their home more eco-friendly. Below are four easy ways to make an impact with your choices.
1. Switch to a smart thermostat
Smart thermostats, like those available by Nest and Honeywell, have been around for a while and are common in newer homes. Older homes, however, will likely have a manual thermostat that requires manual shut-off. These thermostats contain mercury and are being phased out.
Smart thermostats, on the other hand, automatically learn a home’s temperature preferences and can be managed remotely over Wi-Fi from a digital device. According to ENERGY STAR, “If everyone used an ENERGY STAR certified smart thermostat, we would save 56 trillion BTUs of energy – saving $740 million each year – and offset 13 billion pounds of greenhouse gas emissions each year, equivalent to the emissions of 1.2 million vehicles.”
2. Choose energy-efficient appliances
Choosing energy-efficient appliances over old energy-guzzlers is a no-brainer. Many electricity providers offer incentives for replacing old appliances so be sure to check which appliances qualify before making the switch. Visit the ENERGY STAR website to learn more about product rebates from utility companies in your area.
3. Install a low-flow showerhead and aerator
Older showerhead models use 6 gallons of water per minute (GPM), compared to low-flow showerheads that use about 2.5 GPM. During a 10-minute shower, a low-flow showerhead can help save 35 gallons of water. Savings in water also translate to savings in heating.
If your faucets don’t have low-flow aerators then you are definitely missing out on significant savings. Reach out to a Hamilton Plumbing, Heating, A/C & Rooter professional to learn more about your options.
4. Consider solar energy
Homeowners across the U.S. have invested in solar energy to power their home. Not only do the energy savings end up paying for the initial investment, but the government also offers homeowners a residential federal tax credit for solar panel installation costs. There’s practically no reason not to go solar.
