5 Tips to Save On Your Water Bill
August 24, 2023
You turn on the faucet, and water comes out — as expected. But what may come unexpected, a few weeks later, is an unusually high water bill. Though a high water bill may be a sign of water leaks, here are a few ways you can cut down on water waste.
1. Install water-efficient bathroom fixtures
Here’s one jaw dropping statistic for you: one person can use up to 41 gallons of water per day. If your water fixtures haven’t been upgraded in years, then consider replacing them with water-efficient ones. According to the EPA, “WaterSense labeled faucets and faucet accessories (such as aerators) are high–performing, water–efficient fixtures that will help you reduce water use in your home and save money on water bills.”
2. Choose an efficient dishwasher
A new ENERGY STAR certified dishwasher will save an average of 3,870 gallons of water over its lifetime. Dishwashers with advanced technology have soil sensors that can automatically adjust the cycle to minimize water and energy use. In addition, more efficient jets use less energy to spray water and detergent during a cycle. An energy efficient dishwasher can be about 80% more efficient than washing dishes by hand.
3. Upgrade your washing machine
Your washing machine may get the job done, but if it’s not ENERGY STAR rated then you’re missing out on serious savings. ENERGY STAR washing machines use about 25% less energy and 33% less water than regular washers. Over its lifetime, the appliance can help you save $380 in energy costs. Over the course of a year, you can reduce water use by more than 2,000 gallons and save about $35 on utility bills.
4. Check your sprinklers for leaks and limit watering time
Your lawn needs water, but the sidewalk doesn’t. So check for leaks to make sure there’s no cash raining outside. Signs of a leak in your sprinkler system may include areas that are much greener than the rest of your lawn, dirty water being sprayed, mold and mildew on the lawn and differences in water pressure.
5. Upgrade your water meter
A modern water meter can help detect leaks in the home and provide detailed information about water usage. Reach out to Hamilton Plumbing, Heating, A/C & Rooter to learn more about upgrading your water meter.
