7 Steps to Summer-Proof Your Home
August 21, 2023
Summertime is a time for fun, sun and vacation. But when you get home at the end of the day, you expect cool air and a place to relax from all of the excitement. During the summer months, controlling the heat indoors is critical to everyone’s sanity. We’ve laid out 7 steps you can take to make sure your home stays nice and cool this summer.
1. Schedule an A/C inspection.
There’s never a good time to have your A/C go out — especially not during the summer. To avoid this 21st century catastrophe, every homeowner needs to schedule an annual A/C inspection. A few things we check include refrigerant levels, ducts and vents, electric terminals, and airflow. We’ll look for signs of wear and tear and make recommendations for service. An annual inspection is key to your A/C functioning properly and efficiently.
An A/C inspection is also a good time to ask our expert HVAC technicians for recommendations for eco-friendly and energy efficient A/C units. We’ll help you find a system suitable for your home and within your budget.
2. Replace the air filter.
You probably don’t even notice the quality of air you’re breathing in inside your home, but if you haven’t changed the air filter in a while, chances are it’s quite dirty. It’s a simple process, but we are happy to take care of this for you if you’d rather leave this to the experts.
3. Clean ceiling fan blades.
Something you probably never think to clean are ceiling fans. Don’t forget to do this before summer starts, or you’ll be breathing in months-worth of dust. No bueno.
4. Test smoke detectors.
Some smoke detectors are so sensitive, that they can be set off by intense frying in the kitchen — and you’ll be reminded of their life-saving presence. Otherwise, you’ll need to check that the batteries are still good.
5. Clean windows and screens.
Whether you have allergies or not, cleaning your windows and screens can help get rid of spring’s pollen, not to mention brighten up your window views. You can create your own cleaning solution with vinegar, ammonia, and hot water. Make it a one-day family project to get everyone in the spirit of summer and speed up the cleaning.
6. Have your plumbing inspected.
The winter may have caused some damage to outdoor pipes and plumbing fixtures. One way to spot a potential problem is to check the water pressure; if it’s low, then we recommend calling in one of our expert plumbers to identify the cause and service it before it becomes a more serious issue.
7. Clean your A/C condenser.
It’s important to clear away vegetation and any debris from the A/C condenser. Keep a two-foot clearance from the unit. Then, shut off the electricity before spraying it with water. Then spray on the coil cleaner and wash it off.
