7 Warning Signs The Drains Need To Be Repaired

Drains typically don’t demand any attention until they start acting up. If you notice any of the following warning signs, you may need to schedule a professional drain repair.

1. Slow drainage

A slow drain could be caused by a clog in the drain or pipe. Soap scum, grease, hair, and other debris can form clogs that get bigger and bigger over time. If safe DIY methods, like baking soda and vinegar, fail to clear the clog, then you’ll need to hire a professional plumber to take a look.

2. Water/waste backup

A slow drain could be an issue with the sewer caused by:

  • Corroded or collapsed pipes
  • Shifted ground
  • Tree roots invading the pipes

All of these underlying causes could lead to bacteria, viruses, and toxins entering the home.

3. Foul odors

You might be tempted to mask rotten egg smells coming from your drains with an air freshener or candles. But foul odors are a sign of a serious problem with the plumbing system. The smell often indicates that waste is stuck in the drains and isn’t properly flowing through the underground pipes. If you keep ignoring it, you could end up with sewage backing up into the home.

4. Frequent clogging

If you’re being careful with what you’re throwing down the drain, then the waste should flow through without a problem. You shouldn’t have to use the plunger on a weekly basis to dislodge clogs.

However, if you’re noticing that more than one drain or fixture is experiencing clogs, then you could have a system-wide problem deep in your plumbing lines.

5. Gurgling noises

Gurgling coming from the shower drain, toilet, or sink is a sign that is air trapped in the drain. The cause may be a faulty plumbing vent or sink trap.

6. Low water pressure

If the main water valve is fully open and you’re experiencing low water pressure, the cause could be drain or pipe degradation, a clog, or a faulty pressure regulator.

7. Pests

Insects consume the bacteria in sewage and rodents eat the pests, creating a problem for the plumbing system. Left unaddressed, pests can lead to major infestations impacting the entire home.

If you’re experiencing any of these issues, call Hamilton Plumbing, Heating, A/C & Rooter to schedule professional drain cleaning.
