Tips to Help Kansas City Homeowners Get the Most Out of Your Air Conditioner This Summer
August 23, 2023
Summers in the Kansas City area can be uncomfortably warm, even super-hot some days. Whether your air conditioner system is a newer, high-efficiency model or an older system that you sometimes suspect is on its last leg, there are some things you can do to get the most “bang” for your buck!
Our KC HVAC professionals have a few suggestions below we think you’ll appreciate.
First, be sure to replace or clean air conditioner filters monthly.
Whether you have the disposable type or a filter you remove and clean, a clean filter is vital for maximum airflow and the best possible indoor air quality. The filter captures dust, dirt, pet dander/hair, and other debris and also works to keep your air conditioner functioning its best.
Consider a programmable thermostat.
If your family is away during daytime hours you may find yourself adjusting the temperature up and down on a daily basis. Is it best to turn the thermostat up while you’re away and turn it back down when you get home, or leave it set? Turning the thermostat up three or four degrees while you’re away can save a substantial amount of money each year.
A programmable thermostat makes it possible to “set it and forget it” as you can customize your settings and the thermostat takes care of the rest!
What about ceiling or box/pedestal fans?
While using fans doesn’t actually lower the temperature, it does create air movement which makes the air feel as much as four degrees cooler to your skin. By using fans, you can set the thermostat up a couple of degrees and never feel the difference! Use fans only in the rooms your family is occupying, as it’s a waste of electricity to use fans in unoccupied rooms.
Clear out the vents.
Vents, particularly those located in floors, can quickly become filled with dust, dirt, debris, or even the occasional “object” such as a child’s small toy. Check the vents throughout your home frequently and clean away dust, cobwebs, dirt, etc. The vents deliver conditioned air to your home, so you want them to be clear and unobstructed.
Also close off vents in rooms that aren’t being used to save on energy consumption and cost.
Try to use heat-generating appliances in the early morning hours.
Clothes dryers, the oven, and even burners on the stove top can generate substantial heat, making it harder to cool your home in the heat of the day. Use these appliances early in the day when it’s cooler, or better yet, hang your laundry out to dry and prepare meals on the outdoor grill.
Cover up windows that allow the sun to come into your home.
Depending on how your home is situated, there may be windows that allow a substantial amount of sunshine to come blaring in during the daytime hours. Use window treatments such as lightblocking shades, blinds, or drapes to keep the sun out, and the indoors cooler.
Consider upgrading your air conditioning equipment – it will save you over the long run.
If your cooling system is 10 years old or older, you should consider a newer highefficiency system. This is especially true if you haven’t had routine maintenance performed on your current system. While the initial cost may seem difficult to swallow, the money you save on energy costs and repairs will pay for your new A/C system over a period of just a few years.
