What You Should and Shouldn’t Do When Your A/C Breaks Down
August 23, 2023
The worst day of summer is when the A/C breaks down. At that point, most homeowners will do anything to keep their home cool while they wait for the technician to show up. However, what most homeowners don’t realize is that they’re probably doing all of the things that they shouldn’t. Here are five things you shouldn’t do when the A/C breaks down and why.
Don’t open the windows.
You might catch a breeze or two, but you’ll actually end up letting more heat inside. Instead, close the blinds, drapes, windows and doors to trap cool air inside and keep the sun from heating up your home. Use a portable AC unit, if you have one, as a temporary cooling solution.
Don’t stay home.
What’s worse than a broken A/C in the middle of summer? Staying home and wallowing in your 100℉ misery. Instead, take the kids out to the park or local swimming pool while you wait for the technician to show up and fix the A/C. Grab lunch, visit friends — anything just to get out of the house.
Don’t use heat-generating devices.
This means no cooking or baking while the A/C is out. Turn off the lights and unplug electronics that may raise the indoor temperature. If you have to cook, do so outside. Or just go out to your favorite restaurant.
Don’t open your freezer.
When you’re desperate for cool air, opening the freezer door sounds like a good idea. Except it isn’t. The freezer was not designed to cool your home and leaving the door open will cause food to melt, leading to dripping water and puddles by your refrigerator.
Don’t try to fix the system yourself.
YouTube videos are great for finding DIY projects and keto recipes, but not for fixing a broken A/C.
